History of The ACG

The ACG is a community garden located on land within Wills Park, provided by the City of Alpharetta to the Alpharetta Arboretum in 2009. Today, the ACG has almost forty raised bed gardens, each leased on an annual basis. It also contains garden beds designated for raising fruits and vegetables for donation to the Pantry at North Fulton Community Charities (NFCC). The ACG has a close working relationship with NFCC and has donated thousands of pounds of fresh produce over the past ten years to our neighbors in need.
Each year, the ACG hosts events for the public, to include local groups of boy scouts and girl scouts. These events are educational and teach people about growing plants and the important role a healthy environment plays in providing wholesome and nutritious food. It is especially important to show children that their vegetables have a life before they reach the grocery store in a can or frozen pouch.
The National Wildlife Federation has designated the ACG as a certified Wildlife Habitat, acknowledging our efforts to provide food, water, shelter, and a place for raising young to beneficial insects and animals. The ACG is maintained in a way that has a positive effect on the health of the soil, air, water and habitat for native wildlife.
With the planting of numerous milkweed and pollinator plants, the ACG is a certified Monarch waystation, as recognized by Monarch Watch. The ACG is playing an important part in providing resources to create, preserve, and protect Monarch Habitats. The Monarch butterfly population has been declining due to overdevelopment and the use of pesticides and herbicides. Habitats such as those at the ACG will play a crucial role in the continued survival of this threatened species.
The ACG’s parent organization is the Alpharetta Arboretum, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Please consider making a tax-exempt contribution to the Alpharetta Arboretum. Contributions can be sent to: The Alpharetta Arboretum PO Box 1074. Alpharetta , GA 30009.
